After this four -month training period, participants in the program will join the National Reserve. Romanian Defense Minister explained that this measure aims to rejuvenate the country’s contingent.
The Romanian government approved, this Thursday, the restoration of military service, which will be voluntary for all citizens between 18 and 35 years old, four months long and a total remuneration of more than 8,300 euros.
The goal is to increase and rejuvenate the contingent of reservists of Romania.
The mandatory military service has not existed in the country since January 1, 2007.
During these four months, the volunteers will benefit from accommodation, food and free equipmentin addition to a monthly subsidy of approximately 590 euros, similar to that of the military in the recruit.
After completing the training, they will receive another 6,000 euros, the equivalent of three months of gross average salary.
After this four -month training period, participants in the program will join the National Reserve. New reservists will be required to participate in annual formations and exams.
The Romanian Defense Minister explained that this measure aims to rejuvenate the contingent of reservists.
“This year, more than 120,000 military personnel over 55 will reform. Next year, plus 118,000 and, in 2027, another 111,000. We are talking about approximately 350,000 military personnel over 55 who leave the reserve,” he noted.
Approved update of the National Defense Law
The government also approved an update of the 1994 National Defense Law, which facilitates decision making by the high army commands during conflicts.
The two proposals will be presented this Thursday in Parliament, waiting for the government to be approved before the end of the year.
Romania joined NATO (Organization of the Atlantic-North Treaty, Western Defense Block) in 2004 and is a member of the European Union (EU) since 2007.
The country is about 530 kilometers of border with Ukraine.
