More savings, better quality: these are the (essential) products that should avoid buying at the supermarket

The cost of essential goods has been closely monitored by Deco Proteste since 2022 and, despite small weekly fluctuations, remains at historically high levels. Last week, the price of Cabaz registered a slight descent, but some products have fired, especially a very popular food on the Portuguese table, which has increased by 39% since January.

Between September 24 and October 1, Cabaz Food monitored by Deco Proteste lowered 48 cents, which represents a 0.20%reduction. The total cost is now 241.97 euros, according to news to the minute.

Despite the small relief, the value continues above the one recorded at the beginning of 2025, when it cost 5.81 euros, and is far from the price practiced on January 5, 2022. At that time, the same products were purchased for less 54.27 euros, a difference of almost 29%.

Broccolos lead the climbs

The biggest highlight goes to the broccoli, whose price has risen 39% since the start of the year. Currently, one pound can cost 3.87 euros, more 1.08 euros than in January. In the last week alone, the increase was 12 cents per kilo, equivalent to 3%, says the same source.

In the same period, other products registered relevant climbs: Red potato increased by 11%, 8%fish medallions and cereal flakes also 8%.

Up since January

Compared to the first week of 2025, in addition to broccoli, stand out the climbs of ground roasted coffee (29%), orange (28%) and eggs (28%).

Looking at a wider horizon since January 2022, the most significant increases were in the meat of bulls to bake (97%), eggs (81%) and orange (77%).

How monitoring is done

Deco Proteste has been following the evolution of prices since January 2022. Every Wednesday, calculates the value of Kabaz based on prices collected the day before in supermarkets with online store.

First, the average price of each product available in the simulator is determined, and only then the value of all items is added, obtaining the final cost of the cabaz.

An increasingly heavy cabaz

The analysis, according to, shows that, despite the small weekly descents, the prices of essential food goods remain among the highest since the beginning of the follow -up.

For families, this means that filling the shopping cart is increasingly expensive, even when there are occasional signs of descent.
