Interruption hits devices with Android 5.0 or lower and iPhones with iOS 15.1 or previous versions

WhatsApp stopped working with outdated operating systems on Wednesday (1st.out.2025). The interruption reaches devices with Android 5.0 or lower and with iOS 15.1 or previous versions.

Among the impacted devices are Samsung Galaxy S5, LG G3, Sony Xperia Z2 and Motorola Moto G of 1st generation. Also enter the Huawei Ascend Mate 2, HTC One M8, iPhone 5, iPhone 5C and iPhone 6 that have not been updated beyond iOS 12.

Users of these devices may face failures in opening the application, error messages and blocking in sending or receiving communications. The cut will be global, without geographical distinction.

Technical justification

According to the messenger’s help center, the decision is linked to the implementation of new resources, safety improvements and performance optimization. Without support, devices no longer receive safety updates, increasing the risk of vulnerabilities.

Alternatives for users

To continue using the service, users need to update the operating system when possible, or migrate to the most recent versions of the platform.
