The illicit market of drinks and food in São Paulo moved last year R $ 662 million. The data is from FIESP (Federation of Industries of the State of São Paulo), that highlights and food security.
According to the Federation Department of Deseg (Department of Defense and Security) Illicit Markets, 75.8% of this illicit segment involves transnational products – That is to go through several countries in production before reaching the place of consumption -, making it difficult to supervise and control.
This illegal market also generated loss of R $ 28.48 million of income not generated for workers, In addition to R $ 147 million in unpaid state taxes. This, in Fiesp’s accounts, could fund 39 schools or 40 hospitals.
“The consumption of products without origin compromises not only the economy, but also the quality and safety of food and beverages. FIESP reinforces that acquiring legalized products, with fiscal seal and origin, is a way of supporting a fairer economy, protecting jobs and strengthening the industry,” says the entity.
The survey shows data from the illicit sector amid investigations of methanol poisoning cases in adulterated beverages. Most cases focus on the state of São Paulo.
Another 29 cases are under investigation. Among these cases, a death was confirmed as having occurred by methanol intake. Another five deaths are still under investigation in the state.
