The action is a direct response to increased cases of methanol poisoning recorded in the state. According to the São Paulo government, 10 cases of methanol poisoning have so far been confirmed, with a recorded death, in addition to 27 other cases that follow in investigation. In total there are 37 notifications under analysis.
The operations occurred in neighborhoods of the capital, such as Bela Vista, Itaim Bibi, Jardins and Mooca, and in municipalities of Greater São Paulo, including São Bernardo do Campo and Barueri. In Americana, in the interior, nearly 18,000 bottles were seized in an action that found falsification of beverages, although without the presence of methanol.
In addition, two young people were arrested with forgery, reinforcing the suspicion of criminal groups in this illegal market. In all, 942 tampered bottles were seized during investigations. Concern about health risks has led experts to recommend that, at this moment, the population avoids the consumption of distilled drinks, as there is no guarantee of origin. Some clubs and bars from Sao Paulo have voluntarily suspended the sale of these products as a preventive measure. Authorities claim that inspections will continue at an intense pace, as the national alert on the risks of adulterated methanol alcohol is growing.
