“We didn't know who to turn to”: Spaniards travel from Portugal and end up paying € 3,500 for this reason

A vacation trip to Iceland has become an unexpected problem for a family of Sanxenxo (Spain), who saw the return flights canceled due to the bankruptcy of Fly Play. The round trip tickets had cost about 900 euros, but to return the house eventually spent 3,500 euros.

According to the newspaper La Voz de Galicia, Zeltia González, who traveled with her husband, two young children and other family members, was surprised when she learned from the press that the carrier had ceased activity. “No one put in contact with us, either by phone or by email. We didn’t know who to turn to, the only one we knew was what we read in newspapers,” he said.

The unexpected cancellation

According to the same source, the family had the return flight scheduled for October 5, but this plan disappeared overnight. “Suddenly we were unable to check in and with a flight that had been smoky,” said Zeltia. It should be noted that the family had initially acquired two direct flights that secured the connection between Porto, in Portugal, and Reykjavik, the capital of Iceland.

Adds the publication that, when trying to get support from the embassy, they received the indication that they could only intervene in case of natural catastrophe. “We waited for rescue flights to not leave passengers on land, but that didn’t happen,” he lamented in statements to the same newspaper.

Costs to multiply

It refers to the same source that the family spent hours looking for alternatives. “In 24 hours the price tripled, changed very fast. We did not know what to do and we even bought them before we could not pay,” he explained. The solution found underwent Raíquívik travel to Warsaw and only then to Porto.

In total, all return flights cost 3,500 euros. “If we didn’t buy them, we saw that they could reach 8,000 euros,” Zeltia added.

Passenger rights

The newspaper explains that the organization of consumers and users (occupa) recalls that passengers are entitled to reimburse the amount paid and, in some cases, a travel alternative. However, there is no right to additional compensation.

According to the same source, when the purchase is made directly to the airline and pays by card, the best way is to submit the complaint through the issuing financial entity.

Despite the situation, the family decided not to give up what was still left on vacation. “We were very nervous looking for a solution because we didn’t wait for something like this to happen. We felt helpless,” he said. Still, Zeltia stressed that they want to enjoy the missing days. “We have seen boreal auroras and whales, we want to continue to enjoy,” he says.
