Burger King confirmed the closure of 116 restaurants after nearly four decades of operation.

The decision is part of a divestment process of the Mexican group Alsea, which controls the brand in Argentina and seeks to redirect its investments to other strategic areas.

Present in the country since 1989, when it opened its first unit in the Belgrano neighborhood of Buenos Aires, Burger King ranked third in the fast food sector, behind McDonald’s and Mostaza.

According to local press, the brand failed to follow the pace of expansion of competitors and will be put for sale.

Even with the departure of Burger King, Alsea will continue to present in the country through Starbucks, which maintains 133 cafes active.

The strategy also extends to other markets in the region, such as Chile and Mexico, where the company manages more than 260 units of the hamburgers network.

A similar example occurred in December 2024, when Alsea sold 54 Burger King restaurants in Spain in the English background, moving to reinforce priority brands such as Starbucks and Domino’s.

Company positioning

Sought by the press, Alsea said it does not comment on “rumors or market speculation” and stressed that official communications are released only by institutional channels.

The company has not detailed deadlines or negotiation values, but indicated that its focus will be the expansion of Starbucks.

By 2018, Burger King occupied the vice-leadership in the local fast food segment. However, the rapid growth of Mostza made the network fall to third place, while Starbucks consolidated with consistent performance.

And in Brazil?

Here, nothing changes. Burger King continues to operate normally in all its units, without any impact of the decision made by Alsea in Argentina.

The brand is still present in malls, street stores and food squares throughout the national territory.
