In two years in prison for trying to overthrow the government of her prime minister, the Archbishop of the Armenian Apostolic Apostolic Apostle Angapayan was condemned.
The intense confrontation, which confronted the Armenian Apostolic Church with Pasinian and his government, led to the arrests of many well -known and superior clergy in the summer with the charge of attempting to motivate violently.
In addition to Archbishop Michael Ajapayan, who was sentenced to Friday, another Supreme Clergyman, Archbishop Bagrat Galstian, who led the demonstrations against Pasinean last year, is also in custody faced.
Ajapayan was arrested in June for an interview he gave last year, stating that a coup was necessary in Armenia.
Following these statements, the prosecutor’s office had argued that they were not enough to start a criminal proceedings against him, but after similar statements he made this year, the 62 -year -old clergyman was arrested.
In a statement after the verdict against him, the Apostolic Church argued that Ajapayan’s conviction was an act of “political revenge”.
Passanian is preparing for elections and peace agreement
The confrontation with the Church comes as Pasinian faces parliamentary elections next year and is under pressure to complete the peace deal with Azerbaijan, which will end decades of conflict between the two countries of the South Caucasus.
In August, it is recalled that the two sides had signed a text of a peace deal with the US mediation in Washington, but there are still significant obstacles to the final signing of the full agreement, including Azerbaijan’s claim to change Armenia.
