At a time when card payments and contactless already dominate the daily life, the European Central Bank recalls the importance of continuing to have physical money in the wallet. In addition to being useful in emergency situations, it may even reveal valuable surprises: a 2 euros coin issued in Cyprus is arousing great interest between collectors and is already sold online by thousands of euros, according to The Spanish newspaper 20minutos.
According to ads on buying and selling platforms, such as eBay or Wallapop, copies of this 2 euros chiprotic currency reach values exceeding 1,000 euros, with cases where the requested price reaches 26,000 euros.
This is a special edition launched in 2012, although there are other equally sought after runs, with market values around 1,400 euros.
The rarity of the currency explains the interest. According to official data, only 7,000 units were issued mainly for collectors, with an original price of 20 euros. The value of the coin has shot thousands of euros as it became more difficult to find it in circulation.

2 euros Cyprus currency characteristics
Like the remaining two euros coins, this piece is bimetallic: it has nickel nucleus covered with nickel-lap and couproniquel ring. It measures 25.75 mm in diameter, is 2.2 mm thick and weighs 8.5 grams as it refers to the same source.
On the national face stands out the silhouette of the island of Cyprus with the European Commission building in Brussels, as well as a land globe that symbolizes the role of the country in the European Union. The inscription in Greek reads: “20 years since the adhesion of Cyprus to the European Union.”
In addition to symbolic design, this currency also stands out for its rarity in the European context, as Cyprus does not usually launch many commemorative editions. The conjugation between aesthetics, limitation of units and political message makes it a piece considered particularly attractive for those who value numismatics as a cultural and historical expression of the European Union.
A market that keeps growing
The amount of currency depends on the year of issuance, the state of conservation and the way it was preserved. Sealed editions or presented in official boxes reach higher prices, according to.
Although it is unlikely to find it in a current circulation, experts advise to always check the change, as some copies may emerge unexpectedly.
For collectors, these coins represent not only an object of historical value, but also an investment that has been highly profitable.
