Revealed by Palmeiras, midfielder Eduardo Antônio dos Santos, Edu Manga, died on Friday (3) at 58. He was hospitalized in Barueri (Greater São Paulo), where he dealt with kidney problems.
Alviverde revelation in the 1980s, Edu played for the first time for the professional team in 1985 in a match against Aparecida-SP.
Since then 188 games have been divided between 89 wins, 65 draws and 34 losses. Edu scored 43 goals for the team.
The nickname “Manga” came from former player Denys Facincani, with whom he shared the lecturer shield.
He even served by the Brazilian team between 1986 and 1989, the year he also left Palmeiras. In the last dispute, they beat Paulista’s 4-0 team.
Between 1989 and 1992 he played for America until he was loaned to Corinthians. He left Brazil to play in Japan in 1993.
In a note, Palmeiras mourned the death of the former athlete.
“With deep sadness, we received the news of the death at the age of 58 by Eduardo Antônio dos Santos, Edu Manga, an idol of the Palmeiras fans in the 1980s,” says the text.
“Formed in the club base categories, for which he played professionally from 1985 to 1989, the midfielder has scored 44 goals in 188 games with the alviverde shirt and accumulated calls to the Brazilian team. We gave our condolences to the family and friends of our eternal Edu Manga. Rest in peace, ace,” he adds.
