Former Minister of Economic Security defeated Agriculture Minister Shinjiro Koizumi, son of the popular former Prime Minister Junichiro Koizumi
The ruling party of the elected on Saturday (4) the former Minister of Economic Security Sanae Takaichi as a new leader, making it likely to become the first prime minister woman in the country.
Takaichi defeated Agriculture Minister Shinjiro Koizumi, son of the popular former Prime Minister Junichiro Koizumi, in a second round in a LDP intra-partisan vote on Saturday. She is one of the most conservative members of the party, dominated by men.
Takaichi replaces the prime minister, while the party hopes to recover public support and remain in power after major electoral losses.
It is likely that she is the next Prime Minister of Japan because the party remains the largest in the Baixa Chamber, which determines the national leader, and because opposition groups are highly fragmented.
