To date, Acre has not recorded suspicious or confirmed cases of methanol poisoning, nor have been identified adulterated drinks in the state. Nevertheless, the Secretary of State for Health (Sesacre) warns the population to the risks of consumption of beverages of doubtful origin.
Methanol is a type of alcohol used in the chemical industry, in the manufacture of solvents and fuels, and is not safe for human consumption. A single dose can cause serious complications, including blindness, coma and even death from multiple organ failure.

Authorities stress that even without records in Acre, prevention is critical. It is recommended to consume only drinks of reliable origin and avoid label products, sold in informal locations or price far below the market.
Initial symptoms of intoxication may seem like a common hangover and include dizziness, vomiting, abdominal cramps, mental confusion and blurred vision. In severe cases, symptoms evolve rapidly and require immediate care.
Suspected methanol poisoning, the population should connect to Samu by 192, by the number (68) 3216-1300, or immediately look for the nearest emergency room. Sesacre stresses that rapid notification helps prevent serious outcomes.
