Pedro Sánchez, Spanish Prime Minister
The Government of Spain intends to include the right to abortion in the Constitution and will bring a proposal with this purpose to Parliament, after the PP-Popular Party approved an anti-IVG text, proposed by Vox.
The Prime Minister, Pedro Sánchezwrote on social network X that the Spanish executive will “bring to Parliament a proposal to constitutionalize the right to voluntary interruption of pregnancy, in line with the jurisprudence of the Constitutional Court“.
The Spanish government leader also promised a review of the law that regulates voluntary interruption of pregnancy (IVG) in Spain to “It prevents misleading information or science on abortion”.
This announcement comes from “urgency”, after the largest opposition party, the Popular Party (PP), approved this week a proposal presented at the Madrid Municipal Assembly by Vox, far-right, related to IVG.
The approved proposal establishes that in Madrid health professionals have to inform who request IVG of an alleged “post-abortion syndrome”which could lead to the use of drugs and alcohol to suicidal thoughts, as well as a “Increased cancers in the women’s reproductive device”.
Text of Vox Mente
e It is not validated by scienceas the Mayor José Luis Martínez-Almeida later acknowledged, ensuring that health professionals will not be required to refer to women who intend to abort.
The text of Vox, approved by the PP, said that the alleged “post-abortion syndrome is deliberately hidden”, in particular, in Spain, and that the IVG is “a big deal for the ideology that supports it and promotes: feminism”.
In the midst of the controversy and even before the retreat of Martínez-almeida, the national direction of the PP, chaired by Alberto Núñez Feijóo, said supporting the mayor and structure of the party of Madrid, arguing that “information is never a problem.”
“The PP decided to merge with the far right. They know. They can do it, but not at the expense of freedoms and women’s rights“Sánchez wrote in the X, to justify the two proposals with which the government will advance in Parliament.
Including the right to abortion in the Constitution is complicated
O PP has already rejected the possibility of supporting the inclusion of the right to IVG in the Constitution, which It makes your approval unfeasiblebecause of the necessary majority in Parliament to change the fundamental law of the country.
The largest opposition party also accused Sánchez of taking advantage of this theme, to create a new “smoke curtain” to push the attention of government problems and controversies involving the executive and family members of the Prime Minister related to corruption suspicions.
In the Constitution, following a change to the text introduced last year.
The current abortion law in Spain is from 2010 and establishes free access to IVG and at the woman’s request until 14 weeks of gestation.
For health reasons for women or fetus, IVG can be requested until 22 weeks. In case of extremely severe illness and anomaly of the fetus can be done after this period.
