When the English woman Grace Brand (30) for the first time noticed a sore lump on her tongue, she thought she would soon disappear herself. However, she could not get rid of her even after a few weeks, which forced her to seek help. ., ‘ Doctors have found that they suffer from serious cancer of the tongue for which she had to undergo a demanding surgery.
- The English Grace Brand has discovered an unusual ulcer on her tongue.
- Despite the pain, she assumed that the lump would disappear over time.
- The biopsy revealed tongue cancer in the second stage.
Grace first noticed an unusual ulcer in April 2025, but she thought he was caused by the stress of moving and employing. The sore spot was on the right side of the tongue and never thought of checking it in the mirror. “I had great pain and it influenced my speech. Yet I didn’t consider it to be something serious“said the young woman.
Experts have warned that ulcers normally disappear within three weeks. But the rash that Grace had on her tongue did not heal even after almost two months. The English woman therefore visited her doctor, who immediately sent her to a biopsy. At the end of July, she finally learned a shocking message that she was suffering from language cancer in the second stage.
Must get used to the new language
A few weeks later, Grace was lying on the operating table where she underwent a difficult 12-hour procedure called hemiglosectomy. During it, her surgeons chose half of the tongue and reconstructed it with the skin from the left forearm. In addition, she was removed by lymph nodes on the right side of the neck.
Now she is waiting for six weeks of radiotherapy and months of speech therapy to learn to talk again, swallow and eat. “I will have to learn to use my new language. They reconstructed it to improve my life, but it looks completely different. I am lucky that doctors have captured the disease at the right time. If I started to solve it later, I might lose my full language“said Grace.
The young English woman points to the growing worldwide problem. The number of cases of oral cancer, including the tongue, has increased significantly in recent years, This trend is partially related to human papillomavirus infection (HPV). Although patients have a high chance of survival, if the disease is captured early, this rate is rapidly reduced. Doctors also warn that this condition is increasingly occurring in younger people, without apparent risk factors. Typical warning symptoms include:
- ulcer or lump that does not heal even after a few weeks
- red or white spots on the tongue
- Ear pain or jaw stiffness
