Japan: Bears killed two people

The increase in bears in Japan

More and more bears have been observed in Japan in recent years, even in residential areas, for reasons associated with climate change and decline in human population.

Last month, Japan relaxed the rules for firearms to facilitate their use by hunters in the city regions after increasing bears.

According to NHK public broadcasting, bear attacks have claimed the lives of five people while causing injury 64 in the interval from April to August this year.

Previously, according to government data, the bears had attacked 85 people over one year by March 2025, causing the deaths of three of them.

Last year, 219 attacks and six deaths were recorded.
