The Rot-Pink Wiener city government is currently struggling for necessary savings in order to get the dilapidated city finances under control again in economically difficult times. At the beginning of the year, a budget deficit of 3.8 billion euros was forecast for this year. At least 500 million euros are to be saved.
The situation is precarious. The Vienna city government must save at least 500 million euros in the current budget year 2025. Mayor Michael Ludwig (SPÖ) spent this motto in April in view of a forecast budget deficit of 3.8 billion euros. The office of finance City Councilor Barbara Novak (SPÖ) has not yet announced any concrete figures about the savings already achieved. Large chunks already announced by the red-pink city government, such as the end of the 365-euro-open annual ticket, inflations when parking or raising the local tax will only be effective from 2026.
