Flooding and landslides caused by the constant rainfall in the mountainous region of Darjeeling in East India killed at least 18 people after destroying houses, roads and bridges, according to authorities.

Several people remain missing on Monday (6), while relief and restoration work were underway, government officials said in the Indian state of Western Bengal.

They warned that the number of dead would probably increase as information from remote areas was disclosed.

The districts of Darjeling, Kalimpong, Jalpaiguri and Alipurduter, which were sheltered, were among the affected, they added.

Alerts for more after bad weekend were issued by the regional meteorological office.

Road traffic was interrupted when part of an iron bridge over the Balason River, which connects the city of Siliguri, on the plains, to the mountainous city of Mirik, due to heavy rain.

Large amounts of debris have spread throughout the roads, a disaster management authority said, making it impossible for rescuers to access many places in the remote area.
