Highlander prepares the capsule that will be submerged in 2025, serving customers like China Telecom and AI companies

The Chinese sea equipment company prepares a capsule that will be submerged in the sea near Shanghai to solve the overheating problem in data processing centers. According to (France-PRESse agency), the installation will be carried out in October.

The project will serve customers such as China Telecom and a public company specializing in artificial intelligence computing. The submarine solution seeks to use natural ocean currents to cool the equipment, which process AI data, eliminating the need for artificial refrigeration systems.

The company develops the project in partnership with state builders, as part of a broader government initiative to reduce the carbon footprint of data centers, known for the high energy consumption.

According to Yang Ye, president of Highlander, facilities can save up to 90% of the energy used for refrigeration.

In 2023, the Chinese company presented the project during the World Conference on Mobile Communications in Shanghai. The structure consists of a base of the land season, a submarine photoelectric compound cable, the AE dice cabin substation.

“The submarine database is full of inert gases, providing IT equipment with a closed environment of constant moisture, constant pressure, without oxygen and without dust. It is very friendly for related servers and equipment and significantly improves data center reliability.”said to Highlander during the exhibition.

Microsoft conducted a similar experiment on Scotland coast in 2018. The US company recovered the capsule in 2020. At the time, it stated that the project had been successfully completed, but did not advance to a commercial implementation of technology.
