It is already possible to request the increase of the unemployment allowance in the Direct Social Security Portal. The new support represents a 10% increase in the monthly installment value and can be requested simply and quickly, according to the Social Security Institute (ISS).
Who is entitled to increase
According to the ISS, this increase applies to unemployment allowance, the allowance for cessation of activity and the allowance for termination of professional activity. The goal is to reinforce the support for families with children in charge of unemployment.
According to the Gov.pt portal, the increase can be requested in two main scenarios:
- Monoparental families, where there is at least one child with an active family allowance, and where the older ones are only the beneficiary himself and the children (or equivalent).
- Couples or in fact, where both are unemployed and receive unemployment allowance, or where one receives the subsidy and the other is registered at the Employment Center without any active performance. In both cases, the aggregate must have at least one child who does not work or receive unemployment allowance.
News to the minute recalls that “the 10% increase is attributed to each beneficiary and remains even if one of the couple’s members fails to receive unemployment allowance and receive the subsequent unemployment allowance.”
In the case of monoparent aggregates, the increase continues to be paid while the main beneficiary maintains the right to the subsidy.
How to order
The process is totally digital and can be done on the direct social security portal. According to ISS, just follow these steps:
- Enter the “unemployment” menu;
- Select “Unemployment Subsidy”;
- Click on “Consult and request unemployment subsidy”.
The request is then analyzed by the Social Security services, which confirm whether the beneficiary fulfills the eligibility criteria.
What is the unemployment allowance
Unemployment allowance is a monthly cash support designed to compensate for the involuntary loss of income by those who were unemployed. According to the same source, the benefit is paid to those who are registered in a employment center or employment and vocational training, provided that the minimum period of discounts has fulfilled.
This support has a variable duration, depending on the age and contributory career of the beneficiary. The new increase of 10% reinforces the monthly amount received by the most vulnerable households, in a context where charges with children and fixed expenses continue to increase.
The measure, which also covers independent workers and entrepreneurs on an individual name with ceased activity, according to the news to the minute, is part of the social policies package designed to mitigate the effects of inflation and to protect families in prolonged unemployment.
