Just as methanol beverage contamination spread into the real world, the web was also flooded by discussions on the subject last week.
Since cases of intoxication and deaths have begun to gain prominence, the internet, as always, has become the scene of a conversation explosion. In a few days, the theme climbed into a massive volume of interactions.
The monitoring I did with the help to size the phenomenon: the 1,200 most engaged X/Twitter mentions generated 108.5 million views – the equivalent of more than half of the Brazilian population exposed to the theme. The data shows the platform’s dissemination power and the severity of the situation.

The general feeling, considering X/Twitter, Instagram and news websites, had an average of 4.5 on a scale of 0 to 10, with 547 negative and 726 neutral mentions, reflecting the warning tone and concern around the subject.
The anatomy of the explosion
The analysis of the 1,200 most engaged mentions in X/Twitter – a cut that reveals what really generated repercussions – showed 510 negative, 520 neutral and 199 positive.
The predominance of negative and neutral indicates an audience in search of information and alertness. The high number of retweets (397,800) and favorites (3.1 million) shows engagement and rapid dissemination of content, driven by 720 verified profiles, which expanded the scope and credibility of discussions.

The peak conversations took place on September 30, directly linked to the news from the previous day: the warning of the São Paulo City Hall about the presence of methanol in adulterated beverages and the first confirmed cases and in investigation.
The confirmation of 5 cases and 17 in investigation boosted the increase in mentions, as the population sought and shared information about the crisis.
The impact and the consequences
The explosion of methanol theme in X/Twitter has expanded public awareness of the risks of contamination and pressured authorities and manufacturers for quick responses.
