Goiânia – The first patient with in Goiás is intubated in an Intensive Care Unit (ICU), according to the Secretary of Health of Goiás, Raivais Santos. In a video released by the Secretary of State for Health (SES), he explained that the young woman, who is 25, is serious. She is hospitalized in Uruaçu, northern Goian.
The case was identified by the Goiás Information and Assistance Center (Ciatox) and. Ravais said that the young woman consumed alcohol with her father and brother during a walk in a waterfall in guarinos, and also alone at her house in Itapaci.
“The father and brother are well, are not presenting symptoms, and she evolved into a condition of breathing difficulty, loss of consciousness. It was taken to the emergency unit, where it was intubated,” said the secretary.

The young woman is in the ICU of Centro-Norte Goiano State Hospital (HCN). The secretary explained that the patient has comorbidities, such as obesity and has reacted ill to medicines. She needs to go through hemodialysis.
Ravais also pointed out that the operation to oversee alcohol trade continues to prevent cases of adulterated drink poisoning.
Outbreak of intoxications
- The Ministry of Health reported on Sunday (5/10) that the number of cases by methanol poisoning after drinking alcohol, between investigated and confirmed, reached 225.
- Throughout the country, there are 16 confirmed cases and 209 in investigation. São Paulo is the state that records the largest number: 14 confirmed with intoxication and 178 in suspicion.
- According to the MS, Ceará notified the first case. Bahia and Espírito Santo had suspicions, but the recorded cases were discarded.
- Since the beginning of last week, Brazil has faced a methanol poisoning outbreak, an illegally added chemical in alcoholic beverages to replace ethanol because it is cheaper.
Suspected cases
So far, in Goiás, the Health Department has recorded four suspected cases of methanol poisoning. The records occurred in the municipalities of Itapaci, Formosa, Father Bernardo and Bom Jesus de Goiás – the latter has already been discarded.
According to the portfolio, Ciatox got 27 antidote ampoules against poisoning and that notified situations “comply with the criteria that fill the definition of suspected cases, according to the Ministry of Health’s technical note”.
Also according to the Secretariat, all cases are classified as “suspects” and are under investigation, as tests are still being performed to confirm or rule out the hypothesis of methanol contamination.
Inspection operation
Last Thursday (2/10), the Goiás Public Security Bureau (SSP-GO) launched a task force that aims to combat the falsification of drinks in bars and distributors throughout the state. The integrated operation brings together all public safety forces, which will jointly visit establishments, will verify products and curb criminal practice.
The measure happens after episodes of human contamination by methanol in Brazil.
During the operation, teams will carry out simultaneous inspections in different municipalities, inspecting labels, tax seals and product storage conditions, as well as verifying if the establishments fulfill the legal standards of commercialization.
