Understand the exchange of barbs between Caiado and Ciro Nogueira about Bolsonaro’s succession

The governor of Goiás, Ronaldo Caiado (União Brasil), reacted yesterday to statements by Senator Ciro Nogueira (PP-PI), made in an interview with Globo, about the presidential succession of 2026. In a publication on social networks, Caiado classified as “shameful” what he called the former minister of Jair Bolsonaro to put himself as “spokesman” from the former president and to support the governor of the governor PAULO, Tarcisio de Freitas (Republicans), to the Plateau.

Also over the internet, the senator responded with irony and suggested that Caiado would be “free time” to write big texts on social networks. Politicians are two of the greatest chiefs of the superfederation formed by União Brasil, which has in the governor of Goiás one of its main names, and the PP, chaired by Ciro Nogueira.

“Ciro Nogueira’s anxiety to put himself as a candidate for vice-president of Governor Tarcisio is shameful, and something so stark that he already puts himself as a spokesman for President Bolsonaro, which he is not,” said Caiado. The governor of Goiás also said that if Bolsonaro was interested in having someone who spoke on his behalf, it would be former first lady Michelle Bolsonaro or one of his children.

Caiado accused the parliamentarian of trying to decide for Bolsonaro and veto other names from the right. “At the very point, Ciro already vetos at least three pre-candidatures: those of Romeu Zema, Eduardo Bolsonaro and mine, providing a huge disservice to the right. I do not speak for Zema or Eduardo, but as for my pre-candidacy, I must say that I do not depend on Ciro Nogueira’s endorsement,” said the governor.

Caiado’s discomfort occurs less than two months after his party, União Brasil, formalizing the federation with Progressives, from Ciro. Union members say that the Goian will hardly be able to enable himself as a group option for the Presidency of the Republic.

The governor, however, has emphasized allies do not need authorizations to dive into the endeavor. The exchange of barbs highlights the fragmentation within the right field, where Tarcisio tries to maintain distance from early disputes and the other governors compete to occupy the estate left by the former president.

‘Without strength’ for reelection

By stabbing attacks on Cyrus, Caiado also minimized the electoral potential of the federation colleague: “I have 88% approval in Goiás in the last three years, the largest among all governors. The same research shows that Ciro Nogueira has no strength to reelect senator in his state, our dear Piauí,” he said.

“I suggest to the already former senator who has more moderation and more respect with the other names that democratically put their pre-candidates to popular assessment. Ciro Nogueira has no political stature to judge pre-candidates to president, including mine. And it will certainly not be the decision to build the best strategy to defeat the PT,” the governor added.

Bolsonaro’s ineligibility and the indefinition of his political future have created expectation between allies regarding the former president’s support for a right-wing consensus name. The possibility of Bolsonaro sacrament of Tarcisio’s choice, as Cyrus suggested, is well-deemed by Centrão leaders, who seek to accelerate the negotiations and define the group’s candidate by the end of the year.
