Martinho da Vila, confirmed attraction of the Brazil Style Festival on October 31 at the Ulysses Convention Center, is not just a samba master; He is also a prolific author.

The carioca singer and composer has consolidated over the decades as a multifaceted artist, with a career that transcends the stage and extends to the universe of books.

With more than 50 albums released and a career started at TV Record festivals in the 1960s, Martinho da Vila is also recognized for the literary contribution, being author of 15 books and member of the Carioca Academy of Letters.

In 1999, he founded his own publisher, ZFM, and published the first novel, entitled “Joana and Joanes – a Fluminense novel”. The literary work reflects the profound interest in Brazilian culture, the black history and the cultural ties of Lusophony.

Books such as “Os Lusophone” (2006) highlight the intersection of Portuguese -speaking cultures while the work “Opera Negra” (1998) idealizes the presentation, at the Rio de Janeiro Municipal Theater, of an opera to trace the history of the black population in Brazil.

The sambista also resorted to writing to record the memories. In 1992, he launched “Kizombas, Watch and Festival”, an autobiographical book. More recently, in 2024, he published “Martinho da Vida”, an autobiography that opens unpublished stories to the general public.

Martin’s literature also includes personal honors and raids in different genres. In 2003, he published “Posthumous Memories of Teresa de Jesus,” a book that tells the mother’s life. He also wrote the novel “Red 17” (2007), focused on the experiences of a 17-year-old, and the soap opera “A Serra do Rola-twin” (2009), still unpublished.

Martinho demonstrated concern for education and civic awareness by launching “Let’s play politics?” (1986), aimed at the youth public. In addition, the inseparable connection between musical passion and literature manifests itself in titles such as “The Birth of Samba” (2009) and “Sambas & Enredos” (2014).

Dedication to black representativeness is a constant theme, present in writing and music, reinforcing the struggle for racial equality and valuing black identity.

The depth and eclecticism of Martinho da Vila, evident in the literary career, promise a show at the Brazil Style Festival that goes beyond the great hits such as “Bamba House” and “Dysrithmia”, offering a complete celebration of Brazilian culture on October 31.
