Santiago (Reuters) – Chilean wine exports to Brazil, its main market, are growing, helping to compensate for the drop in sales to the United States, in part due to President Donald Trump’s fares, according to export data and industry experts.

Data from Wines of Chile, a Wine Producers Association, show that US purchases, the second largest market in the South American volume country, fell 13% in the first seven months of the year, due to the imposition of tariffs by the Trump administration.

“We went from zero rates to 10%,” said Angelica Valenzuela, commercial director of Wines of Chile. “Every time you have a fare or blockade, there is some kind of freezing or slowdown.”

Valenzuela said that initially producers and wine importers absorbed the cost of tariffs, but “as it is something that remained longer, the cost began to be transferred to the consumer.”

“What we see now is a less dynamic and declining US market,” he added.

Chile’s exports to China fell almost 23% in the same period, but it attributed this fact to the lower wine consumption, which affected most countries they sell to China.

On the other hand, sales to Brazil are growing, consolidating its position as the main destination of Chilean exports, with an increase of almost 10% in shipments during the period.

Chile is responsible for almost half of the import market in Brazil, said Valenzuela, adding that there is a “huge potential for expansion.”

The number of regular wine consumers in Brazil is growing, especially among women and consumers with the most available income, she said.

Overall, Chile’s wine exports remained stable by 2025.
