Narrated by Gregorio Duvivier, the film recounts the trajectory of Barão de Itararé, one of the country’s first political comedians and creator of the newspaper A Manha, a publication that mocked the powerful, the press and the customs of the Vargas Era.
director Renato Terra recalls that the comedian was arrested and beaten during the Vargas government, without official justification, and says that the film also wants to provoke reflection on “the Brazilian vocation for conspiravo”.
For Terra, it is a way of understanding the country’s history and contradictions.
According to him, the initial idea came from an invitation from Canal Curta to talk about clandestine vehicles of the dictatorship, but the project took a different direction after advice from the journalist who suggested looking at humor as a guiding thread.
