The Genial/Quaest survey released this Wednesday, 8th, shows that the rejection of amnesty for those convicted of the coup acts of January 8th not only remains high, but has increased in relation to the previous survey.

According to the institute, 47% of those interviewed are against any type of pardon, while 35% defend amnesty for everyone involved – including former president Jair Bolsonaro (PL) – and 8% support the measure only for the protesters.

The disapproval also extends to the Dosimetry bill (PL), which proposes to reduce the penalties imposed on those convicted and has the involvement of former president Michel Temer (MDB) and federal deputy Aécio Neves (PSDB-MG) in the discussions.

According to the survey, 52% of those interviewed are against the proposal, as they believe the punishments were fair, and 37% are in favor, claiming that the sentences applied were excessively harsh.

The majority (63%) also took a stance against the Shielding Constitutional Amendment Proposal (PEC), which limits the actions of the Federal Supreme Court (STF) and the Public Ministry, making it difficult to arrest deputies and senators. Only 22% declared support for the measure.

The PEC was approved by the Chamber of Deputies, but ended up “buried” by the Senate on the 24th, after a strong public reaction. The rejection mobilized demonstrations organized by social movements and artists in several capitals.

These mobilizations were perceived as a political strengthening factor for the government. According to Genial/Quaest, 39% of those interviewed believe that President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (PT) emerged stronger after the protests, while 30% consider that he became weaker.

The research was carried out between October 2nd and 5th, based on 2,004 face-to-face interviews with Brazilians aged 16 and over. The estimated margin of error is two percentage points, plus or minus, with a 95% confidence level.
