Harvest it before frost. You will ensure happiness and prosperity

Rituals often differed greatly depending on the region – what was supposed to bring happiness in the south of Poland did not always coincide with superstitions in the north. However, some elements were surprisingly similar symbols among the Slavs. It was believed, among others, in the protective properties of willow. This plant has been used for some interesting superstitions. One of these superstitions had to be done before the first frosts arrived.

Centuries ago, willow was used for many rituals, including: that it has protective properties. Its twigs were used to weave, for example, baby cradles or decorations hung around the house. In Christianity this tree also has great importance, Blessed branches are inserted into the beams of the housewhich is also supposed to provide some protection. Most often, twigs were used or whole trees were planted around the house. Moreover, with young twigs were also made into brooms that were supposed to “sweep away” misfortune from the rooms.

However, some rituals, although not popular in every region, also used the leaves. The willow remains green for a very long time, but in winter its leaves fall, protecting it from frost. And just before they turn yellow and fall to the ground, it is worth collecting a few to ensure your happiness and prosperity.

For this ritual you will only need a few willows, but you can also use twigs. What should be done with them? As with many other herbs and plants, you should place them at home. In winter, our ancestors often kept them in the hall or by the windows. Nowadays, you can slightly modify this ritual – for example, dry the leaves and prepare an interesting mosaic for framing. Such an “image” can be an interesting decoration, and at the same time we will use a superstition from the beliefs of the Slavs.

It is worth remembering that these are only superstitions — they never guarantee anything, but their presence in culture is deeply rooted. This is what our ancestors believed – trying this type of ritual will allow us to get closer to history, and who knows, maybe there is some truth in it.
