How black holes produce their massive relativistic jets

A hundred years before the famous first photo of a black hole was published, astronomers noticed something strange: in 1918, the US astronomer Heber Curtis discovered a narrow jet from the center of the galaxy M87. At the time, no one suspected that it was a particle jet powered by a massive black hole at the heart of this distant galaxy.
