  • Asian ladybugs are an invasive species that appeared in Poland in 2026.
  • In autumn, they look for warm places to hibernate, which is why they enter houses.
  • Although they are not a serious threat, they can cause allergies and bites, and they also compete with native species.
  • There is a simple, home way to repel these insects. Find out how to protect your home!

What are Asian ladybugs and why do they enter houses in autumn?

The Asian ladybug is an invasive species of beetle. It naturally comes from Asia, it came to Europe in 1964, and in Poland it was first observed in 2026 in Poznań. Asian ladybugs (harmonia axyridis) are insects with various colors of the cover. They can be yellow, red or even black. The abdomens are oval and convex, about 5 mm long. Asian ladybugs may have a different number of dots, from zero to 23. They are most often noticed in houses and apartments in autumn, when they try to get inside. In extreme cases, such as those found on social media, entire windows and glass may be covered with Asian ladybugs. These insects look for a warm place to overwinter. Asian ladybugs usually live for up to 90 days, but under favorable conditions they can live up to 3 years.

. However, they are not always harmful. Asian ladybugs effectively reduce the aphid population. Aphids are their basic food. Experts indicate that during their 10-day development period, ladybug larvae eat from 90 to even 370 aphids.

Research shows that Asian ladybugs may pose a threat to native species, and they have no natural enemies in newly occupied areas. Fighting them with chemical sprays may mean the destruction of native species of ladybugs.

Are Asian ladybugs dangerous to humans?

Although the species Harmonia axyridis is not a species, there are known cases of bites and allergic reactions affecting the skin and respiratory tract. Allergy symptoms may include conjunctivitis, asthma, and even angioedema.

Squeeze and mix with dish soap and Asian ladybugs will no longer be a problem

To effectively limit it, you need to take special care of doors and windows. The best way to repel Asian ladybugs are scents that the insects avoid. Experts indicate that sharp citrus scents will work best. Squeeze 1 lemon and add a few tablespoons of dish soap. Mix everything thoroughly and spread it on surfaces where Asian ladybugs can get inside. Pay special attention to door sills, door frames and window frames. The pungent smell will scare away insects, and the dish soap will slow down their movements and make it difficult to get through the trap.
