The ‘Koldo case’ commission: months of uncertainty until the president’s summons
The popular parliamentary group in the Senate, with an absolute majority in the upper house, registered on May 24, 2024 the request for Pedro Sánchez’s appearance in the committee of Koldo case. Since then, in press conference after press conference, the popular spokesperson, Alicia García, had had to answer the “star” question, as she herself defined, about when the day would come when the President of the Government would have to go to give explanations in parliament. An appointment that has not finally materialized until this Wednesday, with the announcement by Alberto Núñez Feijóo that he will do so this October.
The Popular Party, who created the commission in February of last year, could have used their power to seat Sánchez before the European elections, or even before in the Catalan elections, but some senators were suspicious of whether the president would emerge more successful than harmed from the clash with the senators. In public, the excuse for not setting a day was waiting for more supposedly conclusive evidence.
Meanwhile, dozens of those appearing have paraded through the commission, some even several times, such as ministers Óscar Puente or Ángel Víctor Torres. Others on one occasion, like the first vice president, María Jesús Montero; his chief of staff, Carlos Moreno, or the most recent, the president of Navarra, María Chivite, on Monday, September 29. On the side of the alleged plot, among others, José Luis Ábalos, Koldo García, or the latter’s ex-partner, Patricia Úriz, have been called. Also the former president of Adif, Ana Pardo de Vera. Some of those investigated, taking advantage of their legal right, have not testified.
