Neither oven nor fridge: This appliance is the 'guilty' of electricity spending in your kitchen

Not only modern and efficient, this technology is ultimately one of the biggest responsible for the increase in electricity bills. A European study revealed the true “champion” of consumption in the kitchen, and it is not the refrigerator or the oven.

In recent months, with energy prices remaining high and the blackout that affected several areas of the Iberian Peninsula, the topic has returned to the agenda. Many consumers believed that traditional household appliances were the most wasteful, but the truth is different.

The appliance that consumes the most energy

According to a report cited by the Danish newspaper, the induction hob is the equipment that consumes the most electricity in a modern kitchen. Although it is often presented as an efficient and environmentally friendly alternative, the study shows that its average annual consumption is around 748 kWh, a value considerably higher than that of other devices.

A conventional refrigerator uses around 270 kWh per year, while an electric oven uses around 496 kWh. This means that the induction hob can consume almost three times more energy than the refrigerator, contradicting the widespread perception about its performance.

Thermal efficiency with hidden cost

The main reason for this high consumption is the speed with which the induction hob heats up. The technology uses magnetic fields to reach high temperatures in a few seconds, which requires very high power immediately. This speed, although practical, translates into peaks in consumption that increase the electricity bill.

According to the report, “many consumers are not aware of this impact and end up surprised by the monthly costs”, which is why adopting conscious habits is essential to balance the budget.

How to reduce consumption without giving up comfort

Simple gestures can have a real impact. Using only the necessary heat, choosing heating zones appropriate to the size of the pan and avoiding leaving the hob on for longer than necessary are some of the recommended measures.

Furthermore, simultaneously reducing the use of appliances and taking advantage of the hob’s residual heat are effective strategies for saving energy.

Other solutions that make a difference

In certain preparations, using the microwave or pressure cooker may be more advantageous. This equipment consumes less electricity and allows you to reduce cooking time without losing quality.

Another way to save is to invest in appliances with an A+++ energy rating, even if the initial cost is higher. In the medium term, the investment pays off by reducing consumption.

Efficiency depends on the user

The induction hob symbolizes modernity in the kitchen, but it also shows that technology is not always synonymous with savings. The balance lies in the way the equipment is used, with attention to the small details that can make a difference at the end of the month.

In a scenario where every kilowatt counts, knowing the real energy consumers is the first step to avoiding surprises on the bill, and to transforming efficiency into real savings.
