“I have spoken with Bibi Netanyahu a while ago He called me and said: ‘I can’t believe it, now everyone likes me. And what is more important, now everyone loves Israel,’” Donald Trump said a few hours ago in an interview with Fox shortly after announcing an agreement between Israel and Hamas for a ceasefire in Gaza, negotiated in conjunction with Qatar, Türkiye and Egypt. “I told him: ‘Bibi, IIsrael can’t fight everyonehe can’t fight everyone.’”

These words from the president of the United States are revealing of Israel’s precarious geopolitical situation. Strategically, the Israel Defense Forces They have won: they have decimated the Lebanese Hezbollah militia, they have benefited from the fall of Bashar al Assad in Syria and they have annihilated the offensive force of Hamas in Gaza. But politically everything is going wrong for them.

For some time now, especially since Israel caused a famine in Gaza by preventing the entry of food and medicine in March of this year, international pressure has increased considerably. Israel has become a kind of pariah state. And Trump has already given enough signs of fed up with a historical ally that sustains an eternal war without clear objectives, which also goes against the interests and roadmap of the Republican Administration. The MAGA president is more interested in the tariff war and, above all, on the domestic front: grabbing power and fighting against immigration and the Democrats.

The streets of the main European cities have burned these days in favor of Palestine and against the war that Israel is waging in Gaza, considered a genocide by the United Nations and the majority of human rights organizations and experts on the issue. Hundreds of thousands of people have demonstrated in Amsterdam, Roma o Madridand they have previously done so in historical figures in Sydney, London and even Berlin.

Governments historically sympathetic to Israel have begun to turn the helm. United Kingdom, which handed over historic Palestine to the Zionist project for the creation of a Jewish state, has recognized the Palestinian state and suspended negotiations for a trade agreement with Israel. Francewhich fought Egypt hand in hand with Israel after the nationalization of the Suez Canal in 1956 and has the largest European community of Jews, has done the same. And he has led alongside Saudi Arabia a historic conference at the United Nations last September, which consolidated unequivocal international support for the ceasefire and the two-state solution, a Palestinian one alongside the Israeli one. The Netanyahu Government and the majority of the Israeli parliamentary arch reject it.

Germanywhich continues to support Israel no matter what and has projected the country’s flag on the Brandenburg Gate to commemorate the second anniversary of the Hamas attacks, has, however, suspended the sale of weapons to its ally for fear that they will be used against the Palestinian civilian population, whose massacre is disgraced by Chancellor Friedrich Merz.

The European Union, despite the brake imposed by the German president of the Commission, Ursula von der Leyenis promoting the suspension of part of the trade agreement with Israel after verifying that it violates the article on respect for human rights, especially due to the famine caused by the blockade of humanitarian aid.

Israel is not Sparta

Israel’s loneliness due to the bleeding in Gaza and the West Bank is evident. In September, the UN approved a resolution calling for a two-state solution with 142 votes in favor and 10 against. Only Israel itself opposedUnited States, Argentina and Hungary, in addition to some microstates in the Pacific. Eleven new countries have joined the formal recognition of the State of Palestine, bringing the total to 157 of the 193 nations with a seat at the UN.

Netanyahu has tried to promote a confrontational reaction to that isolation. Diplomatically, he has insulted or banned entry to anyone who has asked him to end the destruction of Gaza: the Secretary General of the United Nations, António Guterres; the presidents of France, the United Kingdom or Spain, Emmanuel Macron, Keir Starmer y Pedro Sanchez

The Israeli has literally proposed that his country become a “super Sparta”, an isolated country at war against the world. “We are Athens and Sparta, or perhaps a super Sparta. “We have no other option,” he said in a recent speech to respond to the economic measures, popular boycotts and sanctions that are proliferating against the country. A powerful polis with an autonomous and buoyant economy, and citizens always in arms and aligned with their Government. The stock markets collapsed and he did not air this idea again.

Israel is a small country. It has ten million inhabitants and its GDP is around 500,000 million eurosslightly less than a third of that of Spain. It has a powerful military industry, but the bulk of the weapons it uses comes from the United States and Germany. The United States has allocated $21.7 billion in military aid to Israel since the start of the war in Gaza.

Its famous Iron Dome, and other key missile defense systems, cannot function without the United States and without the support of countries in the region. Jordan and Saudi Arabia, for example, helped intercept the missiles launched by Iran in the first confrontation more than a year ago. There are reasonable doubts that that dome, enormously expensivecan operate in a sustained war against the Persian giant. At least 40 Israelis were killed by Iranian missiles in the so-called “12-day war.”

The famine and the attack on Qatar

Israel has systematically violated all red lines that the West has placed on it, including those of its American ally. The former president Joe Biden He asked him not to invade the southern Gaza city of Rafah, where refugees from the rest of the Strip were flocking in early 2024. He even went so far as to suspend the shipment of the bombs he had been constantly supplying. Netanyahu ignored him and completely razed the city, which no longer exists.

The International Court of Justice More than a year ago, he demanded that Israel protect civilians in its offensive and allow humanitarian aid in, calling the attacks “plausible” genocide. The Hague court gave him an ultimatum that Tel Aviv ignored.

Everything began to change with the unilateral breaking of the phased ceasefire agreed by Israel with Hamas last March. Netanyahu ordered will cut off all entry of humanitarian aid or fuel in Gaza. A widespread famine began that left images of starving children and the death of dozens from malnutrition. That meant an emotional break even among the allied governments, which began to raise their tone.

Trump publicly showed his exhaustion with Netanyahu during the war with Iran (June 13-25 of this year), which Tel Aviv launched unilaterally and into which the United States Air Force was dragged along. After joint bombings, the American president ordered a stop. He even demanded that the Israeli fighters turn over. back in mid-flight while they were heading for a new bombardment of the Persian country. “They don’t know what the hell they’re doing,” Trump snapped, visibly angry.

The point of no return was Israel’s bombing of Qatar on September 10 to try to assassinate the Palestinian negotiators of the talks sponsored by the United States. Trump met with Netanyahu at the White House and forced him to call the Qatari Prime Minister, Mohamed Bin Abdulrahmanen, to apologize and promise that he would not attack his country again. He then posted a photo of the contrite Israeli prime minister calling on the phone, while Trump held the phone.
