Initiative by the Ministries of Education and Finance seeks professionals aged up to 65 to work in regions with few resources

China’s Ministry of Education and Ministry of Finance announced the hiring of 7,000 retired teachers to work in compulsory education schools in rural areas of the country. The initiative, released in a joint statement on Wednesday (October 8, 2025), is part of a government action plan started in 2018 to improve the quality of education in less developed regions.

The program aims to recruit mainly retired principals, teaching research staff and experienced teachers up to 65 years of age. Once selected, the educators will work in several rural locations in China, contributing to the establishment of education in regions that have historically faced a shortage of educational resources.

To encourage teachers to go, the Chinese government will guarantee additional salaries and health insurance. The program is part of a broader strategy by the Chinese government to improve the quality of education in rural areas of the country, particularly in subjects such as English and physics.

Professionals will work in educational institutions located in counties, towns and villages that have been lifted out of poverty, underdeveloped areas, border regions, and other locations with insufficient educational resources. Villages in remote regions, such as Nujiang and Ganzi, are included in the places that will receive professionals.
