Hamas leader declares end to war with Israel

Khalil al-Hayya, leader of Hamas, gave a speech to the Palestinian public this Thursday (9), stating that Israel and Hamas “have reached an agreement to end the war and aggression against our people.”

Al-Hayya said the initial ceasefire agreement between Israel and Hamas would lead to a sustained ceasefire, the entry of humanitarian aid and the opening of the Gaza border crossing with Egypt.

The leader of the terrorist group stated that the agreement provides for the release of 250 Palestinians serving life sentences in Israeli prisons, in addition to 1,700 Gazans who have been arrested by Israel since the start of the current war two years ago.

He said mediators and the United States have provided assurances that the deal will lead to a complete end to the war.

According to the newspaper The New York Timesal-Hayya did not elaborate on possible obstacles to the deal, including whether Hamas would be willing to hand over its weapons and allow an international force to play a role in stabilizing the enclave.

The first phase of the agreement was signed earlier this Thursday by Israel and Hamas in Egypt.

In addition to the ceasefire and hostages, the first phase also foresees the release of hundreds of Palestinian prisoners by Israel; the beginning of the withdrawal of Israeli troops from parts of Gaza; and the daily entry of hundreds of humanitarian aid trucks into Gaza.

Israel’s security cabinet is expected to approve the ceasefire agreement later on Thursday, although the meeting has been postponed. An Israeli government spokeswoman said the ceasefire in Gaza would begin within 24 hours of cabinet approval.
