According to the president, by blocking the measure, Congress ‘prevents the country from collecting more fairly’ and compromises social policies financed with resources arising from taxation on the richest
The president reacted, this Wednesday (8), to the decision of the Chamber of Deputies that overturned the provisional measure (MP) that provided for compensation for the decline in the increase in . In a publication on X (formerly Twitter), Lula stated that the result “is not a defeat imposed on the government, but on the Brazilian people”.
“The Chamber’s decision to overturn the provisional measure that corrected injustices in the tax system is not a defeat imposed on the government, but on the Brazilian people. This measure reduced distortions by charging a fair share from those who earn and profit most. From the richest”, wrote the president. Lula classified the vote as an obstacle to “tax justice” and the “balance of public accounts”. According to him, by blocking the measure, Congress “prevents the country from collecting more fairly” and compromises social policies financed with resources arising from taxation on the richest.
“What is behind this decision is the bet that the country will raise less to limit public policies and social programs that benefit millions of Brazilians. It is playing against Brazil”, added the president. Without mentioning names, Lula followed the same line adopted by allies, such as the Minister of the Secretariat of Institutional Relations, Gleisi Hoffmann, who also regretted the result. Both reinforced that the decision favors the richest and harms the poorest population.
The president avoided directly mentioning the governor of São Paulo, Tarcísio de Freitas, identified by PT members as one of those responsible for the government’s defeat, as well as Centrão leaders, including Ciro Nogueira and Antônio Rueda. The rejected provisional measure was part of a set of economic actions aimed at fiscal recovery and the expansion of the Union’s revenue. With the decision, the text loses immediate validity, imposing a new political setback on the Palácio do Planalto in its relationship with Congress.
