The trajectory of Martinho da Vila, one of Brazil’s most respected and eclectic artists, is marked by curious twists and turns that took him from military service to professional music. Before dedicating himself fully to art, Martinho, who takes the stage at the Estilo Brasil Festival on October 31, served in the Army for 13 years, reaching the rank of sergeant.

The turn to stardom occurred in 1968, when the song “Casa de Bamba” exploded at the 4th edition of the Brazilian Popular Music Festival on TV Record, becoming one of the biggest classics. And success came to an artist who, initially, didn’t even intend to be a singer.

Martinho says that, when he was called by a record company, the only desire was for the compositions to be recorded by recognized artists.

However, the record company surprised him with a singing contract, arguing that he had a “different timbre”.

He agreed to record an album to professionalize his compositions, releasing his first album in 1969.

After appearing on television and with his career taking off, Martinho da Vila took a two-year unpaid leave from public service, planning to return, but he never returned to the Army, dedicating himself exclusively to music from 1970 onwards.

Despite having a long career with more than 50 albums, three Latin Grammys and being recognized as a campaigner for black representation, Martinho da Vila maintains a relaxed philosophy about longevity in art. According to him, “Those who go slowly arrive very well and rested”.

Martinho da Vila, the bamba who revolutionized Brazilian music, will take all this joy and his vast collection of hits, such as “Disritmia” and “Canta Canta, Minha Gente”, to the Estilo Brasil Festival on October 31st, in a celebration that brings back the best of roots samba.

The event is hosted by Banco do Brasil Estilo, sponsored by BB Visa, Banco do Brasil and Federal Government cards. The realization is Metropolisesproduced by Oh! Arts.
