The agreement was confirmed by Israelis, Palestinians and negotiators participating in talks in the Egyptian resort of Sharm El-Sheik. Trump, who pushed to broker the deal, said on social media Wednesday that both sides agreed to the first phase of their peace plan, which requires Israel to withdraw its troops to a previously agreed line.
He said he may travel this weekend to the region, where talks are underway in Sharm el-Sheikh, Egypt. “I am very proud to announce that Israel and Hamas have signed the first phase of our Peace Plan. This means that ALL hostages will soon be released and Israel will withdraw its troops to an agreed line, as the first steps towards a strong, lasting and eternal peace,” Trump said in the post on Truth Social.
Netanyahu talks about historic agreement
The Israeli prime minister described the agreement as “a crucial turning point” as well as “a diplomatic success and a national and moral victory” for Israel. He also thanked President Trump for “his unwavering commitment to the security of Israel and the freedom of our hostages.”
Netanyahu did not provide further details about the agreement. The cabinet of ministers should meet on Thursday to endorse the pact, but there should be no obstacles to its approval. “With God’s help, we will bring all the hostages home,” he said. The group bringing together the hostages’ families celebrated the ceasefire and said they will not rest until the last of them is home.
