Rubio invited Vieira to a meeting in Washington, says Itamaraty

The two spoke by phone this Thursday (Oct 9); government spoke of “positive dialogue” and the date of the meeting has yet to be defined

The United States Secretary of State, Marco Rubio, invited the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Mauro Vieira, to a face-to-face meeting in Washington. The meeting should address the main themes of the bilateral relationship, including economic and trade issues. The date is yet to be defined.

The invitation was made during a telephone conversation this Thursday (9.Oct.2025), by the president (PT) in a radio interview Piat FMfrom Bahia. According to Lula, the dialogue marks the beginning of a new stage in negotiations with the USA. “Brazil doesn’t want a fight with the United States. Maybe they’ll start having conversations from now on, and let’s see if we can come to an agreement”these.

According to a note from Itamaraty, Vieira and Rubio had a “positive talk”, in which they agreed that technical teams from both governments will soon meet in Washington to follow up on what happened (6.Oct).

Rubio was chosen by Trump as the main interlocutor with the Brazilian government. The Republican senator is considered a member of the most ideological wing of the North American government and is close to the deputy (PL-SP).

“Minister Mauro Vieira maintained telephone contact today with the US Secretary of State, Marco Rubio, following the phone call between Presidents Lula and Trump, on Monday, 6/10.

“On that occasion, after a very positive dialogue on the bilateral agenda, they agreed that teams from both governments will hold a meeting soon in Washington, on a date to be defined, to continue the treatment of economic and commercial issues between the two countries, as defined by the presidents.

“The Secretary of State invited Minister Mauro Vieira to join the delegation, in order to allow a face-to-face meeting between them, to discuss the priority issues of the relationship between Brazil and the United States.”

Lula and Trump connection

The dialogue between Trump and Lula took place in the wake of a conversation, which lasted less than 1 minute, behind the scenes of the General Assembly of the (United Nations) on September 23.

In the interview this Thursday (Oct 9), Lula once again praised Trump’s tone during the phone call. “He called me in the kindest way a human being can deal with another. I was treating him in a civilized way and he was treating me in a civilized way.”he stated.

The Brazilian president added that the conversation “It was an extraordinary thing, I told him what I should have said, that it was necessary to remove taxes on Brazilian products. Now another moment begins”.

On July 9, Trump imposed 50% tariffs on Brazilian imports into the United States. Despite a list having almost been excluded from pricing, the measure on August 6th.

Among the political reasons that drove the North American decision were Bolsonaro’s trial at the (Supreme Federal Court) and the decisions, mainly from the Supreme Court, in relation to big techs and the content published on the platforms. The measures were considered censorship by the Trump administration.
