“I welcome the announcement of a agreement to guarantee ceasefire and the release of the hostages in Gaza, based on the proposal presented by the president [de Estados Unidos, Donald] Trump,” said the president of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyenin a statement this Thursday.
Both Von der Leyen herself and the president of the European Council, António Costahave valued the diplomatic efforts from the United States, Qatar, Egypt and Türkiye, and celebrate the support of the parties. The person responsible for foreign policy of the bloc, Kaja Kallas, has offered EU support in the implementation phase of the agreement.
Von der Leyen has called on the parties to respect the terms of the agreement, which should lead to the release of all the hostages taken by Hamas two years ago, and a ceasefire in the strip, besieged by the Israeli army. “Suffering must end”, the German insisted.
“The agreement on the first phase of the Gaza peace agreement represents “a significant advance”Kallas said. An advance that, the leaders of the European Union agree, must be taken advantage of to find a “credible” political path towards lasting peace and security. For Costa as for Von der Leyen, this path involves the two-state solution.
Also the president of the European Parliament, Roberta Metsola, has highlighted the pact as “a crucial moment for peace and renewal in the Middle Eastwhich opens a path that could finally put an end to the intergenerational cycle of violence, suffering and terror that has devastated the region. For the Maltese, the pact “gives hope to all those in Gaza seeking a peaceful future and to the families of the hostages who still languish in the Hamas tunnels.”
The leaders
For the French president, Emmanuel Macron, the pact is “a great hope for the hostages and their families, for the Palestinians of Gaza, for the region.” For the Italian Prime Minister, Giorgia Meloni“it is extraordinary news that opens the way to a ceasefire in Gaza, to the release of all the hostages and withdrawal of Israeli forces to the agreed lines”.
Meanwhile, “the EU will continue to support the fast and safe delivery of humanitarian aid in Gaza,” Von der Leyen said, adding that “when the time comes,” they will be prepared “to assist in recovery and reconstruction”. Italy, Meloni said, is also “ready to contribute to the stabilization, reconstruction and development of Gaza.”
