Local authorities invested around 2.3 million euros in the program launched by the Order of Veterinary Doctors to support abandoned animals or animals from needy families, the structure responsible for the initiative announced this Thursday.

“Since 2020 and until September this year, more than 2.3 million euros were invested through this program in medical-veterinary services for animals in need, including sterilizations, vaccinations, deworming, surgeries and veterinary emergencies”, revealed the Order of Veterinary Doctors (OMV), in a statement.

launched the Vet Solidário initiative in 2014, starting with a partnership with the municipality of Lisbon, which consisted of the allocation of veterinary checks for basic care.

Subsequently, it created the National Veterinary Health Support Program for Companion Animals at Risk, known as veterinary checks, to safeguard animals at risk, namely dogs and cats.

This Thursday, the Order announced the municipalities that invested the most in the last five years in this measure: Angra do Heroísmo (14.8%) of the total of 2.3 million euros, Vila Nova de Famalicão (12.9%), Braga (11.5%), Vizela (6.2%), Felgueiras (4.5%), Aveiro (4.5%), São Brás de Alportel (4.0%), Oeiras (3.6%), Faro (3.6%) and Fundão (3.3%).

This year, until September, around 444,000 euros were made available by the local authorities, and the five that stood out the most here were Braga (15.8%), Vila Nova de Famalicão (14.3%), Paredes (14.1%), Angra do Heroísmo (9.0%) and Felgueiras (9.0%).

Currently, this network has around 400 veterinary centers, nationwide, and 41 municipalities involved in social support for companion animals, according to the same source.
