Of all the possible options, Emmanuel Macron has once again chosen the least imaginable in a normal scenario. But it’s been a long time since France is not. The President of the Republic has decided reappoint prime minister al recently resigned Sébastien Lecornu…what has accepted “out of obligation” after asking not to return to office.
Between ultimatum and ultimatum, Macron’s deadline was running out this Friday night, after starting an ‘extension’ thanks to the last efforts of the omnipresent Lecornu, who gave the head of state another 48 hours to find a new prime minister. For the outgoing member, there were ‘elements’ that encouraged thinking about a potential agreement, especially with the socialists, as a key bloc to allow a majority in the National Assembly… but always with him out of the equation. Or so Sébastien thought…
Clinging to that hope, the Elysée has been a hive of political figures in recent hours, with the very notable and foreseeable absences of the leaders of the extreme right and ultra-left. Neither Marine Le Pen nor Jean-Luc Mélenchon wanted to participate of some consultations that Macron has held with the parliamentarians of his own movement, but also with republicans, socialists, communists, environmentalists and other smaller groups.
While voices are growing calling for a new electoral advance to establish a new parliament, especially in the conservative ranks, Macron was clear about the first mission. Name a prime minister to present a project budgets with which break the legislative blockade. As EFE details, this would have to happen this Monday if the task of approving the accounts before December 31 is to be fulfilled.
However, the first statements upon leaving the Elysée parties already indicated that consensus, consensus, just the right one. The representatives of the PSF and the GreensOlivier Fauré and Marine Tondelier, respectively, assured after meeting Macron that they expected another chosen one far from the left and they did not guarantee that there was no imminent censure against his figure.
