When it comes to the question of the future of the global climate, there is a central source of information for political decision-makers: the progress reports of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC). They explain how the climate will develop depending on the actions of us humans. One researcher involved in producing these reports is German-British climatologist Gabriele Hegerl, who conducts research at the University of Edinburgh. On the 20th anniversary of the Wegener Center for Climate and Global Change at the University of Graz at the beginning of October, she gave a lecture that presented the latest state of climate research. She spoke to STANDARD about how certain our knowledge about climate change is, what role politics can play in the search for a secure future for us humans and what we as individuals can do.
