Do you have cats at home? Discover how they can be the solution to stop fogging up your car windows

With the arrival of autumn, increased humidity and low temperatures bring a common problem to drivers: fogging up windows. In addition to reducing visibility, this phenomenon is annoying and can even compromise safety on the road. However, there are simple and effective solutions, and some can be found right at home.

Homemade and cheap tricks

Before resorting to expensive products, sprays or electric dehumidifiers, it’s worth knowing some homemade tricks that work surprisingly well. There are everyday objects that help control the humidity inside the car and prevent the windows from becoming covered in condensation.

The first step is to use the air conditioning system correctly. Air conditioning, even in winter, is an essential ally for drying the air inside the vehicle. However, there are complementary ways to speed up the process and keep the environment dry for longer.

Cat litter: the unexpected ally

Anyone who has a cat at home may not imagine that they already have one of the best solutions. Silica-based cat litter is extremely absorbent, a feature that also works inside the car.

The trick is simple: just put a handful of sand inside a sock or a small fabric bag and leave it on the dashboard or next to the windshield. Silica absorbs moisture from the air and prevents condensation from forming on the windows.

In addition to being economical and reusable, this solution does not release odors and can be kept for weeks, making it perfect for those who want to avoid daily fogging without complications.

The little bags of silica that we throw away

Another practical resource are the small silica pouches that come inside shoe boxes, backpacks or electronic products. They almost always end up in the trash, but they are true miniature dehumidifiers.

Placed in car compartments, under the seats or even in the glove compartment, these bags help absorb moisture and keep the interior dry. Even the smaller ones make a difference, especially on rainy days.

Over time, the silica saturates, but it is possible to “recharge” it by exposing the bags to the sun or the heat of the oven for a few hours, a simple method that allows them to be reused several times.

Cork stoppers: a very Portuguese trick

Cork, a natural and porous material, also has the capacity to absorb moisture. Placing some wine bottle corks in the interior of the car, in the glove compartment or in the cup holders, helps prevent the glasses from fogging up.

It is an ecological, free and 100% Portuguese solution. In addition to being discreet, it does not require any maintenance and can be used in conjunction with other methods.

Small gestures that make a difference

Avoiding damp carpets, not leaving wet clothes in the car and opening the windows slightly before parking are simple habits that reduce the level of humidity in the cabin. Every small gesture contributes to a more comfortable and safer drive.

Car air conditioning experts, cited by the Spanish portal, remind us that, if the problem persists, it is important to check the cabin filter, the door rubbers and possible infiltration. Constant fogging often indicates seal failures or dirt accumulation in the ventilation system.

In the end, the secret is prevention. Combining the correct use of air conditioning with these homemade tricks is enough to keep the windows clean, visibility perfect and the car’s environment dry throughout the autumn.
