Game of Thrones spin-off debuts in January in a very different Westeros

After months of silence, HBO has released a trailer and release date for the new series in the Game of Thrones universe. The series wants to escape fantasy and get closer to the real world — a “14th century England”.

Despite the global disappointment at the end of one of the most watched series ever, HBO continues to expand the Game of Thrones universe. With House of The Dragon still on air, with season 3 scheduled to premiere in June 2026, next year will begin with a new story in Westeros.

“A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms” premieres on January 18th and will be set in the centuries that separate Game of Thrones from its prequel, House of the Dragon.

You follow a knight errant, Sir Duncan the Tall (Peter Claffey), who has no noble pretensions, on his travels through the seven kingdoms, until he takes on the guardianship of a young man who needs his protection. The good-hearted knight, helpless after the death of his master, met Egg (Dexter Sol Ansell) at a tournament. The little bald boy will be a member of one of the most important families in the universe — but the series will not focus on that.

The person responsible for the series, Ira Parker, cited by , highlights that the new production differs from the rest of the GOT universe: it will not have the usual epic opening and will focus, unlike the rest of the saga, on ordinary people instead of real families.

The objective is to escape the fantasy universe and show a kind of “14th century England”explains Parker. Set at least a century after the fall of the Targaryen dynasty and fifty years after the death of the last dragon (although there will be “dragons”, according to the trailer), the series promises to portray a world almost no magic.

The new series has already suffered several delays until it has a definitive release date. After long periods of vague announcements, the series finally hits screens on January 18th. Here’s the trailer:
