The Minister of Justice and Public Security, Ricardo Lewandowski, stated this Friday, 10th, that the new name to occupy the seat left by Luís Roberto Barroso in the Federal Supreme Court (STF) should be chosen and indicated after the return of President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (PT) from his trip to Italy.
Lula leaves this Saturday, the 11th, for Rome, where he will participate in the World Food Forum 2025. Despite the date set for his departure, there is still no official return date.
“These decisions have to be quick, but well considered. The president has his time. He has a trip scheduled abroad, and I believe that, upon his return, this must be decided”, said Lewandowski during the Esfera Forum, held in Belém (PA).

During the event, Lewandowski also praised the judge. “Minister Barroso did an excellent job at the Supreme Court. He was a great colleague, a leading intellectual, and he will be missed. We all learned a lot from him.”
Barroso announced his early retirement from the STF last Thursday, 9th. At 67 years old, he could remain in the position until 75, the age limit for Court ministers. At the end of September, he had transferred the presidency of the STF to minister Edson Fachin.
Asked about possible nominations, Lewandowski denied being involved in the discussions and said he did not express a preference for any name for the succession.

“I, as a citizen, want there to be someone who has the constitutional requirements, notable legal knowledge and an unblemished reputation. This is the president’s personal decision, and he does not need to consult anyone”, declared the Minister of Justice.
