The president participates in the opening of the World Food Forum, on Monday (13), in an event promoted by the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO). Afterwards, he participates in the in-person meeting of the Council of Champions of the Global Alliance against Hunger and Poverty. Co-chaired by Brazil and Spain, the Second Meeting of the Council of Champions of the Global Alliance against and Poverty will bring together ministers, government representatives, multilateral banks and civil society organizations. The meeting will take place in a hybrid format and will evaluate the progress of the initiative since its creation in 2024.

The Alliance was established as a proposal from the Brazilian presidency of the to support and accelerate efforts to eradicate hunger and poverty while reducing inequalities. Among the main themes are advances in the Fast Track Initiative, which supports national plans to combat hunger and poverty in countries such as Ethiopia, Kenya, Haiti, Rwanda and Zambia, with more than 80 expressions of interest from financial and technical partners. As part of the initiative, the Global Alliance against Hunger and Poverty is actively supporting the development of nine national plans aimed at accelerating action against hunger, poverty and climate risks.

According to Itamaraty, the Alliance is about to have 200 members, including countries and organizations such as agencies, programs, university institutions and development banks – the main sources of financing for its projects and plans. There are currently 13 requests for new members in the group, seven from the African continent, two from Latin America and the Caribbean, three from Southeast Asia and one from the Middle East.

President Lula will also participate, in Rome, in the inauguration of the space where the support mechanisms of the Global Alliance against Hunger and Poverty will operate, before returning to Brazil, still on the 13th. The invitation for Lula to participate in the Forum came from the director general of FAO, Qu Dongyu, in July, when the Brazilian president was informed, by telephone, that Brazil had left the Hunger Map.

The World Food Forum runs until the 18th, during which the 80th anniversary of the creation of FAO will also be celebrated. Created in 1945, the World Food Forum is a global platform to accelerate the transformation of agri-food systems, in line with the 2030 Agenda and the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

Structured around the pillars of Youth, Science and Innovation and Investment, the Forum adopts the “four betters” that guide the management of the general director, Qu Dongyu: better production, better nutrition, better environment and better life. The 2025 edition will be marked by a series of commemorative activities and recognition of good practices in food security and sustainable agriculture. “As part of the initiative, the Global Alliance against Hunger and Poverty is actively supporting the development of nine national plans aimed at accelerating action against hunger, poverty and climate risks,” said Itamaraty.
