French President Emmanuel Macron will travel to Egypt on Monday to express his support for the implementation of the agreement presented by Donald Trump to end the war in Gaza between Israel and Hamas.
According to the French presidency, Macron will take advantage of the visit to discuss the next steps of the peace plan with his partners, without clarifying whether he will meet with American President Donald Trump, who is also planning a trip to Egypt.
The visit is part of the continuity of the Franco-Saudi initiative and the work started in New York, in September, to implement a peace and security plan in the Middle East, based on the two-State solution.
Ceasefire has come into force
Israel and Hamas concluded a ceasefire agreement in Egypt on Thursday, which came into force on Friday, providing for the release of hostages held in Gaza within 72 hours in exchange for prisoners held by Israel.
This agreement is based on a plan announced at the end of September by Donald Trump to end two years of war in Palestinian territory.
The second phase of this 20-point plan, at the heart of the differences between Israel and Hamas, concerns the disarmament of the Islamic movement, the exile of its fighters and the continuation of Israel’s gradual withdrawal from Gaza.
The ceasefire aims to end two years of war in Gaza, triggered by attacks on Israel, led by Hamas on October 7, 2023, which caused around 1,200 deaths and 251 hostages.
Israel’s retaliation has already killed more than 67,000 people and caused around 170,000 injuries, most of them civilians, according to data from the Gaza Ministry of Health (managed by Hamas), which the UN considers credible.
