The Black Women Decide movement released a note in which it advocates that the president (PT) take advantage of the minister’s decision to nominate the first black jurist to the (Supreme Federal Court).

In the note, the entity states that the appointment “would represent a concrete step towards racial and gender equity within the highest instance of the Brazilian Judiciary, after 134 years of absence”.

The movement recalls that, in 2023, it presented a triple list with jurists Lívia Santa’Ana Vaz, Soraia Mendes and Adriana Alves, which now includes names such as Sheila de Carvalho, Karen Luise Vilanova and Vera Lúcia Santanna de Araújo.

“The list is not a ceiling. But we are suggesting names that are available as supreme”, says Tainah Pereira, political coordinator of the Mulheres Negras Decidem movement. “Black women offer a counterpoint to the institutions’ modus operandi and contribute to changing legal culture, traditionally thought by and for white men.”

The note cites data from the CNJ (National Council of Justice) from 2023 that indicate that the percentage of white people in the Brazilian judiciary is 83.8%, compared to 14.5% who declare themselves black.

For the entity, in the year of the second National March of Black Women, on November 25, “Lula has the chance to advance a historic demand of the Brazilian black women’s movements.” “Concrete reparation would have an even more powerful symbolic meaning if this announcement were made during Black Awareness Month”, he concludes.
