China reacted to the promise of the President of the United States, , to impose an additional 100% tariff on all products imported from the country, in response to what it called the “extraordinarily aggressive position” adopted by Beijing in international trade.

Beijing made the first comments on Trump’s statements and highlighted the imposition of countermeasures if the tariff is implemented.

A spokesperson for the Ministry of Commerce stated, this Sunday (12/10), that “if the US persists in acting unilaterally, China will resolutely take corresponding measures to safeguard its legitimate rights and interests”, said a spokesperson in Beijing’s first reaction.

This occurred after the Chinese government announced a series of export controls on rare earths, lithium batteries and superhard materials, essential inputs for the production of electronics and technological products.

On Thursday (10/9), five ministerial communiqués presented a “double-layer” strategy for supply chains, reinforcing state control over resources considered strategic.

China dominates around 60% of production and almost 90% of global refining of these materials, which gives the country a central position in global technology and green energy chains.

Escalation

The US announcement escalates tensions between countries in trade negotiations: “Resorting to threats of high tariffs is not the right way to engage with China,” said the Ministry of Commerce spokesperson.

He added: “Our position on a tariff war remains consistent: We don’t want one, but we’re not afraid of one.”

The online statement also states “firm and corresponding measures”.

“US actions have seriously harmed China’s interests and undermined the climate of bilateral economic and trade negotiations”, added the spokesperson, adding that operations on rare earths are “legitimate”.

“We have just learned that China has taken an extraordinarily aggressive stance on trade, sending an extremely hostile letter to the world stating that, starting November 1, 2025, it would impose large-scale export controls on virtually every product it makes, including some it doesn’t even make. This affects EVERY country, without exception, and was obviously a plan they devised years ago. It is absolutely unheard of in international trade and a moral disgrace regarding to other nations,” Trump wrote in Truth Social.

The North American leader stated that they will adopt an equally tough stance. “Starting November 1, 2025 (or sooner, depending on China’s actions), the United States will impose a 100% tariff on China, on top of any tariff they are currently paying,” he declared.

Trump also announced that the country will impose export controls on “any and all critical software” produced in North American territory.

The Republican did not detail which sectors would be most affected by the measures, but indicated that the decision is part of a strategy to protect the economic interests of the United States. “It is impossible to believe that China took such action, but it did, and the rest is history,” he said.
