Election night will have AI for the first time: avatars take on the role of commentators

“A new way of telling Portugal” is this year an alternative to traditional means of communication. At noon, 21.72% had already gone to the polls.

Portugal is returning to the polls on a voting Sunday to choose representatives of municipal councils, municipal assemblies and parish councils, to choose local governance for the next four years.

From 8:00 am onwards, the polls receive ballots: By noon, voter turnout was around 21.72% — above the 20.94% of the last local councils of 2021. In 2021, almost half of voters — 46.35% — chose not to vote. It remains to be seen whether the situation will reverse in 2025.

With the polls closing at 7pm (8pm in the Azores), election night begins this year with a technological novelty.

The one from the Ministry of Internal Administration (MAI) will make available, in real time, data on turnout and, from 8pm, provisional results — with minute-by-minute updates as parish counts arrive. But you can also choose the channel Account there to watch the debut of the panel of virtual commentators generated by artificial intelligence (AI) in media coverage.

Two avatars, with realistic appearance and professional profiles, will be the protagonists of this pilot experience, with continuous and accessible analysis of the 308 Portuguese municipalities and under human supervision and with ethical guarantees of reliability and rigor, guarantees the channel.

If you haven’t voted yet and want to know where to voteyou can consult the census website, access the Interactive Map of the Voter Portal or send a free SMS to number 3838 with the text “RE [número de BI/CC] [data de nascimento no formato AAAAMMDD]”. Voters abroad must send the message to the international number +351 962 171 000. Information can also be obtained from the parish council, city council or corresponding diplomatic representation. Anyone who has changed their address and updated their Citizen Card will have their voting location automatically updated; otherwise, the previous location will remain.
